As a multidisciplinary field at the intersection of oceanography and geophysics, physical oceanography is covered in both specialized oceanographic journals and broader geophysical publications. These journals feature studies on ocean dynamics, air-sea interactions, mesoscale and submesoscale processes, ocean heat budgets, and numerical modeling. By compiling this resource, we aim to facilitate access to relevant literature for researchers, students, and professionals in the field. Whether you are looking for high-impact journals or specialized publications, this collection will help you navigate the latest advancements in physical oceanography.

GOOS

Scientific journals are indexed in various repositories that categorize them and provide information on their relevance within their field. In this section, we use the open repository Scimago, which classifies journals into subject categories and ranks them based on impact metrics. For physical oceanography, two relevant categories stand out: Oceanography and Geophysics

The Oceanography category is broad, encompassing 147 journals that cover general oceanographic topics. Among those with a specific focus on physical oceanography, the most relevant are Journal of Physical Oceanography, Deep-Sea Research, Progress in Oceanography, Ocean Sciences, and Frontiers in Marine Science, among others.

The Geophysics category includes 156 journals, with Journal of Geophysical Research and Geophysical Research Letters being particularly relevant for physical oceanography.
