On this day in history...

...in 1975, NASA launched GOES-1, the first satellite in the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite series. It carried the Visible Infrared Spin-Scan Radiometer (VISSR), one of the early instruments utilizing infrared technology to observe Earth's weather systems. Although primarily designed for meteorological purposes, VISSR contributed to the early development of Sea Surface Temperature measurement techniques from space.
